Me Cliff Grenade is a versatile and highly regarded Mauritian and Australian barrister, admitted to practise in Australia, New Zealand and Mauritius, and known for his expertise in International Law, Corporate Tax law and human rights advocacy in both Australia and Mauritius. He is also one of the few lawyers in Mauritius who was a chartered accountant before he was a lawyer. That combination, courtroom advocacy on one side and a Master's in Taxation with years of professional accounting on the other, is the foundation of Cliff Grenade Legal Studio: a practice he manages for international business and migration matters, and for every case where the law and the numbers cannot be separated.

Trained in the numbers before the law
Most lawyers meet a balance sheet in a client's file. Cliff kept them for a living. Before being called to the bar he worked as a chartered accountant, then completed a Master's in Taxation, and that path makes him one of the few Mauritian lawyers with deep, specialised knowledge of fiscal law. It is why Corporate Tax law sits at the centre of his practice rather than at its edge. For clients this shows up in practical ways: tax structures argued by someone who has built them, commercial disputes read through the accounts as fluently as through the contracts, and advice that does not need a second professional to translate it.
One practice across three jurisdictions
Born in Mauritius and a law graduate of the University of Canberra, Cliff is qualified to practise in Australia, New Zealand and Mauritius, and he manages Cliff Grenade Legal Studio across all three: International Law engagements, international business, cross-border transactions and migration matters that begin in one jurisdiction and land in another. Clients whose lives or businesses span these countries deal with one advocate who is answerable in each of them, rather than a chain of referrals.
Australian Commercial, Criminal Law and Immigration Law
The Australian side of the practice is working advocacy, not a mailing address. Cliff has appeared before various Australian courts and tribunals, and the firm offers practical, strategic, client-centred representation across Australian commercial, criminal and immigration law: advising businesses and individuals on commercial matters, contractual disputes, regulatory issues, business interests, cross-border issues and transactions, and criminal proceedings, with the international perspective that comes from working across both jurisdictions.
A public record in Mauritius
A lawyer is also measured by what he does when nothing obliges him to act, and Cliff's human rights advocacy is on the public record. After public outcry over leaked videos of police misconduct, he and other prominent lawyers held conferences at the Mauritius Bar Association advocating strict zero-tolerance policies and mandatory psychological evaluation for new police recruits. He has served on the defence panel in major political and criminal cases, including the private prosecution around former minister Yogida Sawmynaden and the Telfair investigation. And as Permanent Secretary of the African Continental Free Trade Area (Mauritius Branch), he works to promote intra-African trade and Africa's position in global trade negotiations.
